Arun Sanyal, MD, has developed, mediated and encouraged global liver research as a physician-scientist for 25 years. Currently, Dr. Sanyal is the Charles Caravati Distinguished Professor and Chair, Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine for the past 10 years.

His esteemed medical career has spanned the spectrum of translational science in liver cirrhosis, NASH and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), with a particular focus on obesity and cardiovascular affects related to liver disease.

Dr. Sanyal is a past President of the AASLD (American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases), and has chaired committees at the NIDDK NASH clinical research network and the NIH hepatobiliary study section.

Dr. Sanyal continues to lead a number of major drug trials for the treatment of NASH with the support of his research nurses, fellow post-doctoral staff-members and laboratory professionals. Dr. Sanyal has published numerous liver disease papers in leading medical journals and periodicals throughout his career.

Recently, Dr. Sanyal has helped to establish the international Liver Forum for NASH and now serves as a Chair of this organization comprised of industry, academia and regulatory bodies from the USA and EU. The Liver Forum serves as a thought-leading collaboration of relevant high-level, corporate and academic decision-makers who jointly seek to better respond to regulatory requirements regarding drug development and related diagnostic innovations in the NASH/NAFLD disease space.

In 2016, Dr. Sanyal will also begin participation in a US-government appointment as special Council Board Member to the NIAAA (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism).
